Mark Ruiz to Volunteer at Special Concert in Tribute to Sammy Nestico, Prolific Musician

2014 Feb 5

Cadets from Army and Navy Academy have been invited to volunteer for two special concerts. The concert series will be held on February 8 and 9, 2014 at the Carlsbad Community Church, and will feature the Coastal Communities Concert Band and members of the 1st Marine Division Band.

The performances are in tribute to Sammy Nestico, a prolific musician and arranger. Nestico arranged music for the US Air Force and US Marine Corps bands, and is also known for playing trombone for Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, and Gene Krupa. Most famously, he was an arranger and orchestrator for television and film including Mission: Impossible and Charlie's Angels. Nestico, now 90, will be present at the concert.

Army and Navy Academy Cadets will be present to help however they can, assisting concert-goers by collecting tickets, handing out programs, and guiding guests to their seats, among other things. The Cadet-volunteers, including Mark Ruiz, Class of 2015, are members of the Academy's Atkinson Warrior Band, which has been an integral part of the school's over one hundred year old history.
